3.2 VULNERABILITY OVERVIEW

3.2.1 PROTECTION MECHANISM FAILURE CWE-693

The affected devices have insufficient protection mechanism for the EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) variables stored on the device. This could allow an authenticated attacker to alter the secure boot configuration without proper authorization by directly communicating with the flash controller.

CVE-2024-56181 has been assigned to this vulnerability. A CVSS v3 base score of 8.2 has been calculated; the CVSS vector string is (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H).

A CVSS v4 score has also been calculated for CVE-2024-56181. A base score of 8.4 has been calculated; the CVSS vector string is (CVSS:4.0/AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:H/UI:N/VC:N/VI:H/VA:H/SC:H/SI:H/SA:H).

3.2.2 PROTECTION MECHANISM FAILURE CWE-693

The affected devices have insufficient protection mechanism for the EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) variables stored on the device. This could allow an authenticated attacker to disable the BIOS password without proper authorization by directly communicating with the flash controller.

CVE-2024-56182 has been assigned to this vulnerability. A CVSS v3 base score of 8.2 has been calculated; the CVSS vector string is (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H).

As a general security measure, Siemens recommends protecting network access to devices with appropriate mechanisms. To operate the devices in a protected IT environment, Siemens recommends configuring the environment according to Siemens’ operational guidelines for industrial security and following recommendations in the product manuals.

Additional information on industrial security by Siemens can be found on the Siemens industrial security webpage

For more information see the associated Siemens security advisory SSA-216014 in HTML and CSAF.

CISA recommends users take defensive measures to minimize the risk of exploitation of these vulnerabilities, such as:

  • Minimize network exposure for all control system devices and/or systems, ensuring they are not accessible from the internet.
  • Locate control system networks and remote devices behind firewalls and isolating them from business networks.
  • When remote access is required, use more secure methods, such as Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). Recognize VPNs may have vulnerabilities, should be updated to the most recent version available, and are only as secure as the connected devices.

CISA reminds organizations to perform proper impact analysis and risk assessment prior to deploying defensive measures.

CISA also provides a section for control systems security recommended practices on the ICS webpage on cisa.gov. Several CISA products detailing cyber defense best practices are available for reading and download, including Improving Industrial Control Systems Cybersecurity with Defense-in-Depth Strategies.

CISA encourages organizations to implement recommended cybersecurity strategies for proactive defense of ICS assets.

Additional mitigation guidance and recommended practices are publicly available on the ICS webpage at cisa.gov in the technical information paper, ICS-TIP-12-146-01B–Targeted Cyber Intrusion Detection and Mitigation Strategies.

Organizations observing suspected malicious activity should follow established internal procedures and report findings to CISA for tracking and correlation against other incidents.

CISA also recommends users take the following measures to protect themselves from social engineering attacks:

No known public exploitation specifically targeting these vulnerabilities has been reported to CISA at this time. These vulnerabilities are not exploitable remotely.

Enterprise Account Executive – Cybersecurity TOLA
As a child, I was always fascinated by the night sky and the stars that seemed to twinkle and dance above me. I remember spending countless hours laying in my backyard, staring up at the vast expanse of space and wondering about the mysteries that lay beyond. It was during these moments of quiet contemplation that I first fell in love with astronomy and the idea of exploring the universe.

As I grew older, my passion for astronomy only deepened. I devoured books on the subject, attended lectures at my local planetarium, and even saved up to buy my own telescope. I spent hours studying the constellations, learning about the planets in our solar system, and marveling at the beauty of distant galaxies. Astronomy became more than just a hobby for me – it became a lifelong pursuit.

One of the most awe-inspiring moments of my life came when I had the opportunity to visit an observatory and peer through a powerful telescope at the moon. The detail and clarity of the lunar surface took my breath away, and I was overwhelmed by the sense of wonder and humility that washed over me. In that moment, I felt a deep connection to the cosmos and knew that I was meant to explore its mysteries.

Today, I continue to pursue my passion for astronomy, whether it’s through stargazing from my backyard or attending conferences and workshops to learn from experts in the field. I am constantly amazed by the beauty and complexity of the universe, and I feel grateful for the opportunity to study and learn from it. Astronomy has not only enriched my life but has also given me a greater sense of perspective and appreciation for the world around me.

In the end, astronomy has taught me that we are all connected to something much larger than ourselves. The stars, planets, and galaxies that fill the night sky are a reminder of the vastness and beauty of the universe, and they inspire me to continue exploring and learning about the mysteries that lie beyond our world. Astronomy has become more than just a passion for me – it is a source of wonder, inspiration, and awe that will continue to shape my life for years to come.
