Google recently announced that it is taking legal action against 25 unnamed individuals or entities in China for operating the BADBOX 2.0 botnet and residential proxy infrastructure. This botnet targeted over 10 million uncertified devices running Android’s open-source software, lacking Google’s security protections, and was used for large-scale ad fraud and other digital crimes. To combat this threat, Google updated its Google Play Protect mechanism to automatically block BADBOX-related apps.
The BADBOX 2.0 botnet, first detected in late 2022, spreads through IoT devices like TV streaming devices and digital projectors, many of which are manufactured in China. Cybercriminals gain access to home networks by infecting these devices with malware either before purchase or during the setup process. The botnet has infected over 10 million devices, primarily in Brazil, the United States, Mexico, and Argentina, allowing for illicit activities by threat actors.
